Daewoo Cars in India

Daewoo Motors was a South Korean automotive company founded in 1982 by Kim Woo – Jung. Daewoo ventured into the Indian car market as Daewoo Motors India Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Daewoo Motors, post liberalization when the Indian market was made open and big automotive giants began entering into the market. Daewoo, synonymous with being aggressive carried its operations in India with the same intensity.

It launched three version of its first car Cielo while other giants were still studying the Indian market. Cielo had features unheard of in India such as power steering and auto transmission while still being priced competitively. The aggressive nature helped and the number of booking sky rocketed when the car was launched in 1995. Due to long waiting time and limited service stations Daewoo lost its brand and reputation and never really recovered. Eventually it was acquired by General Motors when they took over its parent company in Korea and the Indian subsidiary was eventually shut down by General Motors because of its huge debt. Matiz and Cielo were the only Daewoo cars which made a known presence in the Indian market.
