Maruti Alto catches historical 25 lakh mark

India’s largest car maker Maruti has sold more than 25 lakh units of its most popular budget car Alto. It has become Maruti’s second car after Maruti 800 to achieve this rare landmark. Alto has been a running success since its launch in Sep 2000.

Alto has always been a favorite with low ownership and maintenance cost, superb mileage and compact design. It carries everything that is required to be a perfect city car. Maruti launched Alto’s K10 version in 2010 which instantly carried its success ahead. The company also launched the Alto 800, a complete makeover to the previous model, in 2012 which again forwarded its reign in the competitive Indian market.

Alto initially was launched with 800cc engine in 2000. The decently powerful engine could produce a power of 47bhp. It was replaced by a 1.1-litre engine in 2001 but didn’t work out to well with the Alto and was discontinued in 2004. With K10 in 2010, Alto used a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder K-series engine with a power output of 67bhp. Alto 800 carries the same technicality but a whole new body and changed interior. Maruti is further planning to upgrade the Alto 800 and it’s reportedly working on it.

Maruti offers Alto in petrol, CNG and LPG models which is another reason of its massive success. The company exports the popular car in the global market as well. Maruti has reportedly exported around 2.85 lakh Altos till date. Interestingly, after fourteen years of the launch, Maruti still sells around 25,000-30,000 Altos every month.

Maruti Alto 800 costs around Rs. 2.72 lakh (base price) while its K10 model costs around Rs. 3.15 lakh (base price). Alto is expected to keep Maruti’s reign in the highly competitive Indian market which is being flooded with global car makers right now.

Alto has fulfilled the dream of million Indians who wanted to own a car without spending much.
