The Mitsubishi company was initially established in 1870 as a shipping firm called Tsukumo Shokai, founded by Yataro Iwasaki. Later in 1873, its name changed to Mitsubishi Shokai, wherein Mitsubishi referred to 'three diamonds'. At present, the Mitsubishi Group, is a Japanese conglomerate, consisting of a range of autonomous businesses that share the Mitsubishi brand, trademark and legacy. In 1998, as a result of a collaboration between Mitsubishi Motors and Hindustan Motors Ltd, distribution began in India as a part of Mitsubishi's global expansion programme,. The company tasted an early success in India with lancer and thereafter launched other models like Pajero, Cedia and Montero.
