Automotive transmission system in a car or bike helps in transmitting mechanical power from the engine to the wheels. Though various kinds of transmission devices are available worldwide, the most popularly used transmission system in India is the manual type. As automatic transmission systems are slowly making their presence felt in India, we will discuss a little about them.

Manual Transmission: The kind of manual transmission system available in the Indian market is called the Sequential Manual transmission. This kind of technology is highly effective given the kind of road conditions that we have as it facilitates sudden acceleration and deceleration.

One is usually required to switch to a higher gear while speeding up, while during slowing down, one has to switch to a lower gear to serve the purpose. These manual transmission systems come with a driver-operated clutch which needs to be pressed while operating the gear stick and they generally come with four to five gears and one reverse gear. For example, a five-Speed Manual Transmission System refers to a transmission system that has five forward gears.

Advantages of Manual Transmission

•  Better fuel economy over automatic counterparts.

•  Cheaper than automatic transmissions.

•  Direct control over the vehicle which is not so in case of automatic transmission.

•  Provides more throttle than automatic transmissions while on the go.

Drawbacks of Manual Transmission

•  Manual transmission demands a great degree of skill and application from the driver which may prove fatal for the inexperienced drivers.

•  While riding uphill, a vehicle with automatic transmission always scores over a vehicle with manual transmission.

•  Smooth and effective gear shifts can only be ascertained by experienced drivers.

Automatic Transmission: Automatic transmission technology was launched in India by Kinetic Motors, through Kinetic Hondaa two-wheeler bike. In this kind of transmission system, the driver is not required to change the gear ratios manually. They change automatically in the gear box, thus relieving the driver of the added responsibility of changing gears. But as they are not that as fuel efficient as the manual transmission system, they are still to become popular around the world. Though some cars come with automatic variants, the manual counterparts score more in terms of customer preferences.
