Hindustan Motors Limited

Hindustan Motors Limited (HML) was established in the year 1942. It was formed by Mr. B.M. Birla. Initially, they started with a small assembly plant in Port Okha near Gujarat. However, in the year 1948, they shifted their manufacturing unit to Uttarpara in West Bengal. It was in this plant that they started the production of Ambassador. HML has manufacturing units located in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh. The manufacturing unit of Uttarpara was started in 1948, is the largest manufacturing unit in South Asia.
This unit is spread over 743 acres of land and is located in the suburbs of Kolkata in West Bengal. This was the plant where the first indigenous car of India- "The Ambassador" was manufactured. This particular plant also manufactures "The Contessa". They are also into the manufacturing of multi-utility vehicles like the Trekker, Pushpak and Porter. Even Auto Parts and auto components are manufactured here.

This unit has paint shop, forging and foundry unit. It is technologically updated as well. This unit is also popularly known as "Hind Motor".

The Thiruvallur manufacturing unit in Chennai is the state of the art manufacturing unit of HML. They are equipped with all the modern technology. This unit was established three decades ago for manufacturing earthmoving equipments like Dumpers, Front End Loaders, etc but since 1998 it is into the manufacturing of modern luxury cars. This unit dedicatedly deals with the manufacturing of Mitsubishi Lancer and the Sports Utility Vehicle - Pajero. They manufacture with the technical collaboration of Mitsubishi Motors, Japan. The plant is also updated according to the present quality standards of Mitsubishi Motors, Japan. This particular plant manufactures standard, economy, luxury and sports version of the Lancer. It also manufactures Pajero 3.2 litre and the Pajero Q. Even the spare parts of Lancer are manufactured here.

The Pithampur unit in Indore of HML manufactures the Road Trusted Vehicle (RTV) in collaboration with OKA Motor Company of Australia. These are indigenously made multi utility vehicles. They have been successfully marketed in the urban, semi-urban and rural areas. Their USP's are space, adaptability and economy. Moreover, they can also be customized according to the needs of the user.

Previously, Hindustan Motors Limited (HML) had collaborations with Isuzu Motors Ltd. Japan from 1983 -1993, Vauxhall Motors U.K. from 1980 - 1990 and Ricardo Consulting Engineers Ltd U.K. from 1989-1993. They also owned an Earth Moving Equipment Division (EED) in collaboration with Caterpillar (U.S.A.) for the manufacture of Dumpers and Excavators, Terex for the manufacture of Dumpers, Loaders& Dozers and Fermac (U.K.) for the manufacture of Backhoe Loaders.
