History of General Motors

General Motors (GM) came into existence on the September 16th, 1908 in Flint, Michigan. It was a holding company for Buick, then controlled by William C. Durant. The next year, Durant brought in Cadillac, Elmore, Oakland and several others. In 1909, General Motors acquired the Reliance Motor Truck Company of Owosso, Michigan, and the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company of Pontiac, Michigan, the predecessors of GMC Truck. Due to a large amount of debt and the collapse in new vehicle sales; Durant lost control of General Motors in 1910 to a bankers' trust. Later, Durant started the Chevrolet Motor car company and purchased a controlling interest in the General Motors. Durant took back control of the company. But sooner, he again lost control of the company after market collapsed and Alfred Sloan take charge of the corporation.
