Automobile Engine works on the premise of 'internal combustion' and the subsequent energy that is released. An Automobile Engine comprises a combustion chamber, where the fuel is burned to unleash energy, immense enough to run the entire car.
Types of Automobile Engines

Two-stroke Engine

As suggested by the name, Two-stroke Engine runs on two strokes, as opposed to the more common four-stroke variety. Rudimentary among the automobile engines in its functioning, two-stroke engines are often used for snowmobiles, mopeds, lawnmowers and also few motorcycles. The two-stroke engines are noisier, less fuel efficient and may cause greater pollution in comparison to four-stroke engine. The ill advantages notwithstanding, the largest compression-ignition engines are usually two-stroke and it finds application in large vessels and some locomotives.

Four-stroke Engine

Also known as Otto cycle, in recognition of its inventor, Nicolaus Otto, four-stroke engine are used in cars, light air-crafts and large boats. In comparison to the two-stroke engine, the Otto cycle stands at an advantage in being less noisy, more efficient and also larger in size.

Bourke Engine

Bourke Engine is a much more refined version of a two-stroke engine. The strokes in Bourke engines occur without the mixing of burnt gas and the fresh incoming air, and due to less friction between pistons and cylinder walls, fuel efficiency is more. Bourke Engine also has greater expansion ratio, which means maximum usage of the heat produced during the combustion.
